「洗濯を通じて、被災者の皆さんのお役に立ちたい」と須田さんは力を込める。炊き出し、お風呂、仮設トイレ……。避難生活が長期化する中で、ボランティアや自衛隊がさまざまな支援を行っている。ところが、「洗濯の提供はあまり例がなく、支援メニューの中で盲点になっていた」と須田さんは指摘する。

　津波の被害が大きい多賀城市では、今でも被災地域を中心に停電や断水が続いている。被災地では洗濯機を含む家電製品の多くが水に浸かり、使い物にならない。避難所の多くも断水しており、「洗濯をしたくてもできない」という住民が少なくない。

　そうした中で、須田さんらが持ち込んだ洗濯機が大車輪の活躍を見せている。朝8時に洗濯機は稼働を開始。「1日25組が精いっぱい」（須田さん）というが、避難している住民から重宝されている。
